Phones differ in price by model, year of manufacture, configuration and condition, so the range within one category is wide. Sellers set their own prices, so compare a few listings for the same model before you make an offer.

Check the IMEI to confirm the handset is not reported stolen or blocked, and read the battery health percentage (in Settings on an iPhone, through a diagnostics app on Android). The phone must be signed out of the iCloud or Google account before handover, otherwise it stays locked to the previous owner. Open a plain white and a plain black screen to spot dead pixels and burn-in on OLED panels.
