Cameras differ in price by model, year of manufacture, configuration and condition, so the range within one category is wide. Sellers set their own prices, so compare a few listings for the same model before you make an offer.

Ask for the shutter count on the body and compare it with the rated shutter life for that model. Photograph a flat white surface at f/16 — that is how sensor dust and spots become obvious. Hold the lens up to the light to check for fungus, haze and scratches, and make sure the aperture blades move smoothly and are free of oil.
